Magnesium deficiency

Magnesium deficiency in healthy individuals who are consuming a balanced diet is quite rare because magnesium is abundant in both plant and animal foods and because the kidneys are able to limit urinary excretion of magnesium when intake is low.

Among the reason for magnesium deficiency including:
*Agricultural fertilizers often contain inadequate amounts of magnesium.
*Boling vegetables causes loss of magnesium.
*Popular beverages and softdrink contain higher amount of phosphates, which interfere with magnesium absorption.
*Consumption of large amounts of salt, coffee and alcohol can interfere with magnesium absorption or cause magnesium loss from food.

Susceptibility to the effects of magnesium deficiency roses when demands for magnesium increases markedly with the resumption of tissue growth during rehabilitation from general malnutrition.

The symptoms of magnesium deficiency are specific to the organ system affected. Symptoms of magnesium deficiency may include agitation and anxiety, irritability, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms, confusion, muscle spasm and weakness, hyperventilation, insomnia, poor nail growth, and even seizures.

Deficiency of magnesium is as important a factor in the development of osteoporosis as calcium. Research shows that patients with osteoporosis and magnesium deficiency also have low serum levels of vitamin D in its most active form.

Magnesium deficiency is most common seen in gastrointestinal disorders causing malabsorption/chronic diarrhea, and in chronic alcoholism. It can also be seen associated with protein-calorie malnutrition, acute pancreatitis, and in a variety of conditions associated with wasting of magnesium.

Too much coffee, soda, salt, or alcohol intake as well as heavy menstrual periods, excessive sweating, and prolonged stress can also lower magnesium levels.
